Rainy Theme Song

The Rainy Theme Song by Alex Clark.

i have a billion nieces and nephews. when i was deciding on a personal project, i wanted to
include them. i also love seattle and i love cartoons. combining all of that, i came up with the idea
for rainy: a blog written by a little girl who just moved to seattle. all of the content will be web-based
and will include short cartoons, photographed adventures, downloadable activities, and
eventually online games. i want to create a portal for families to have fun and get interested in
visiting seattle… ahem… my brothers and sisters.

Plexus

Plexus by Jonathan Daniels
Music by Analogue Rex

The seed for this project started in fall of 2008 on a page of logo concepts, with an image of a severed arm with a tattoo making a muscle. At the beginning of senior project, I revisited this idea by drawing out what the arm would be if it was attached to a person. Since there could be no shoulders for the arm to attach to, I drew a simple concept drawing of a man with only bones for a torso. The project developed out of me working out how the man could have gotten into that state.

From this beginning, I began to explore my (apparently) recent fascination with amputation and dismemberment, and began creating concepts for the monster that my character would fight. At first, I was going to go for more of an insect-like creature, but then decided to go with a large pink serpent similar to one I had invented for a painting I finished in Painting II in spring of 2009. This was partially due to continuing themes I had explored before, and partly due to ease of animation, as many segmented body and legs would take much longer to animate.

As the project progressed, I began to explore more ideas relating to popular culture and mass media, linking the new iconography of the characters I had invented with established iconography (albeit distorted) from the world of advertising and corporate imagery. In addition, I included over 70 subliminal messages throughout the animation, both visual and auditory, flashing messages for single frames, and backmasking words into the music.

Vauj: A Kite Story

Vauj: A Kite Story, an animated film by Tou Yia Xiong

“Vauj” (pronounced “vow”) is a 2D animation about a Hmong boy reminiscing about flying kites with his father. He remembers how their kites danced in the wind and soared through the clear blue sky, as well as the moment that changed the course of his future.

Tou Yia Xiong (BFA University of Wisconsin-Stout) produced this wonderful animation for his senior project this spring.
